2008 - How can I keep my mind off Mother Africa
I would say that no single hour passes by without being
drawn back to Mother Africa and all what she has been given me during the last five
years. I am trying to conserve the memories the best I can, but I am constantly
being drawn back to the magic continent. That's what happened here in Zurich, I
found Africa again! At least part of it and the good thing was, it looked happy
and healthy.
Zurich Zoo has built a "indoor rainforest" which has a
Madagascar miniature wildlife any zoo should envy them. Visiting the zoo is not
my favourite pass-time activity, but during the last two years I have visited
many just to see what conditions they provide the imprisoned animals. What
Zurich Zoo has done with this enormous hall was both impressing and amazing, a
11.000 sqm area holding 98 % humidity and a constant temperature of around 25
Celsius, I am sure the wildlife population are as happy they can be outside the
real Madagascar Island.
Over hundreds of different species of animals, birds,
crawling objects and plants have found their new habitat here. The investment and
involvement the Zoo has with African countries and especially the Masoala
Rainforest connection and collaboration with Masoala National Park in Madagascar
convince me that such projects make sense. During the 90 minutes "safari" inside
the jungle definitely reminded me that I am in Europe just to visit, I feel that
Mother Africa needs more of my attention in the years to come.
The above picture shows my ranger Cornelia who guided me
safely through the humid gateways of Masoala Rainforest in Zurich, Switzerland.
