Countryside, Southern Sudan - Monday 29 January 2007 - And then it was the muddy river...

We meet this deep and muddy riverbed on our way to Malakal, so we had to camp for the night. In the middle of the river, we found a deserted Toyota, sunken "knee deep". After a few minutes, the owner of the car came (NGO working on road improvement :-)) He tried to find a phone to explain colleagues in Malakal that he was stuck and send for help. Well, help was already there!!! Betsy chewed her cable and dragged her back on dry land. We will cross the river tomorrow, with some help from the village close by, they provide bricks and wood and then the cars have to do the rest.

The road from Khartoum, almost 500 km south is tar, then its good gravel, then bad gravel and then just grass and swamps. I realized that my co-pilot was fairly quiet the last part of the day, and maybe a growing concern about what he has put him self into? I don't know..
