Juba, Sudan - Thursday 15 February 2007 - Can someone help Mayen to transfer to a city hospital?

On Tuesday 13 February we visited a hospital in Bor, runned by "Doctors without Borders". We were invited by Berit Aamlid Syvertsen from Norway (Medical Coordinator), to visit one of the 50 patients in the hospital, Mayen Majok. NRK made a documentary, focusing on Mayens crisis in a nationwide telvision fundraising program in Norway 10 months ago.

During school holidays he was herding cattle together with a friend and they were suprised and attacked by a lion, Mayen tried to escape the predator when he stumbled right into a big fireplace and burned both his legs and arms. Since then he has been under constant supervision by DWB in Bor and taken care of by the staff at the hospital. They use 10 hours a week just to change his bandages and have miracoulsly kept him a live. They dont know  for how long they will be able to keep him alive, and in order to save his life, he needs a transfer. The organisation used his story to promote the work done by DWB and focus on the desperate need of donation to the units worldwide.

Unfortunately, Mayen is still in the same situation that he was in, during the documentary shown in April 2006. He is still in a life threatening situation in which the local hospital cannot do much more than change his bandages twice a week. They urge people or organisations to find a solution to move him to a place where he can get proper treatment, training, physiotherapy and support.

Mayen would like to thank Bjarne Johan Johansen from Norway for giving him a good will gift, which hopefully will able him take his mind away from the despair. We bought schoolbooks, a cassette radio, clothes, a torche, soap and some food, drinks and sweets. Thank you Bjarne!
