Malakal, Sudan - Saturday 3 February 2007 - Waiting for spareparts for Betsy

Malakal consist of a city, a river and thats about it! But the city is very nice and the river is spectacular, its the White Nile. Our ADRA friend Andrew told us they had a cinema that is just skin and bones now due to heavy bombing thirty years back. There is also a zoo that we would very much like to visit and of course report from. You have a market, busy streets with shops and NGO and UN on every street corner. Two months back there were "an incident" in Malakal that caused all the international aidworkers out of the area, but since then everything is back to normal. As you need a photo permit in Sudan, there has been very little photography and what I have will be displayed only after we have crossed the border :-) :-) It is actually a little bit easier in the south though.

The above picture is from Malakals streetlife, which we will explore much more of as our "seal" (sparepart for the wheel mountings) did not arrive as hoped on Thursday. We expect a plane from Khartoum on Monday and the earliest we will start from Malakal will be on Tuesday 6th of February. Lets cross our fingers that we are ready to leave by then, although Ter, Andrew and his team are very hospitable and we dont suffer at all. And Betsys interior dust is gone and Erlend Carpenter looks at improvements.
