Rabak, Sudan - Sunday 28 January 2007 - On the way to Southtern Sudan

AND then we are headed back south. On Friday (see above picture) we were on our way towards Egypt to have a look at the historical sites in Sudan. We joined Abd Salam and Taha on an "outing" and went all the way up to Meroe and the pyramids in the Nubian Desert. Then back south to the 3000 year old historical ruins where we had food, fruit, tea and other refreshments. I finished my interview with Abd Salam’s son Saad under the shade of some dry acacia threes and that boy impressed me both with his answers, understanding and his English was excellent. A son to be proud of Mr. President!

We parted with our good friends on Saturday as they drove with us to the outskirts of Khartoum. To describe the stay in Khartoum there are no superlatives that are adequate. Marvelous, outstanding and we will miss our friends a lot. Of course we will meet again somewhere in this tiny World.

We left Khartoum at 14.00 hours, escorted to the city border by Taha and Abd Salam and managed to drive 300 kilometers the first day on the journey south. We pass through checkpoints with smiles and hellos and so far no problem driving without a special governmental permit to the south. We talked to fellow campers of us in Khartoum and were adviced to buy permits for almost 100 US Dollars. Lets hope we avoid those kinds of fees.
