Asmara, Eritrea - Friday 29 December 2006 - Under the skin of four torn countries
Johan Bergqvist, our last co-pilot contributes with this story "Under the skin of four torn countries", please read it, its better than any best selling thriller you got hold of this year. Thank you Johan.
In the eyes of comfortable Westerners, reading the bloodstained stories and watching the pictures of hungry-eyed children, the Horn of Africa is a piece of worthless territory. Oh, how wrong they are.
Sure, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Djibouti and Eritrea are four countries torn to pieces by poor governments, war and famine. But beyond the eerie pictures and hollow stories there is an ocean of joy, smiles, culture, history and excitement. I have surely seen more of that, than of pain, horror and suffering during my weeks on the roads of the region, with cape2cape.
This is a testimony of 30 days and 30 nights of an African road trip during
November and December 2006. It is my interpretation of the reality I have
travelled through. This is my truth about the countries and their peoples. I’m
sure there are many more, but this is mine.
