Eritrea, Saturday 16 December 2006 -  The roads that doesn't exist

The roads so far in Eritrea has been great, meaning roadconditions are good and the roads are as wide as they they are long... We have been driving through areas where the entire scenery is black due to a volcanic outbreak not long ago. Sand dunes white as peaceful doves and blue and greenish ocean next to the road. Why they call it the red sea beats me, but it might have been named during the time of dusk or dawn. Amazingly, these roads are not mapped into any of the country maps we have seen so far, it is sometimes dotted as a 4x4 track, but the geographers/gismo's should definitely use a couple of more "points" on the marker, the road is immaculate and shouldn't be compared with a pist.

As for tourist and travellers safety, we wouldn't mind recommend you to wait until the unrest between Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea is calmed down. We are happy to have passed Assab because that area would be the centre of attention for militia groups if something should happen in the near future.

I am also happy to present a PDF document from Johan Bergqvist, his thoughts and pictures can be found by clicking on this link: Johan in English. Johan has also written in Swedish which can be found here, if you are not able to read Swedish, you can enjoy his pictures on the same pages.
