Djibouti, Wednesday 13 December 2006 - Sabrina, a well off Djiboutian
|
We are still wandering about in the coastal city of Djibouti on Africa's horn. We finished an interview for the book project "Children in Africa" on Tuesday. We met Sabrina Samir Ahmed, a shy (at first) and smiling girl from this tiny republic who have high hopes becoming a dancer when she finishes school. A brief visit to hospital Balbala to visit Carlo Astini and his wife, who has been working as doctors in Djibouti for 15 years. It was a totally different world from the prosperous and well functioning hub we experience in the busy streets of the inner city. I showed some of the images from the children's ward to employees at the embassy and they denied strongly that "This is not Djibouti". Images here 50 % of the children population is malnourished and paint the city with as many colours you want and try to hide the misfit, but the truth will always find its way to the surface. Djibouti is in many ways fortunate, a lot of people live good and seamlessly happy lives. So be it, but please don't deny the dimmer pictures of ordinary peoples struggle for life. Go behind the scenes and inhale what is sadly the real life for many of the Djiboutians. There are always backsides to every colourful glossy and framed picture. |
