Ethiopia, Sunday 3 December 2006 - The Christmas celebrations has started
|
Well, at least in Norway that is! Although I happened to see some Christmas garment on display in a shop in Uganda in October, so the holiday rush is not a Norwegian phenomena. If I remember correctly, my brother had his first lutefisk in late October this year (Lutefisk: cod preserved in a solution of potassium carbonate), which is a traditional dish served mainly during Christmas in Norway. Starting the holiday traditions in October is too early, even though Lutefisk is extraordinary delicious. We are now resting in the city of Harar, close to the Somaliland border and will be crossing the border on Monday. On Sunday we have planned an interview with two kids, visiting the World Heritage site and a guided tour in the famous brewery (Harar beer). The original city Harar is surrounded by high walls and was created by the arabs as a city state in the 7th century. It consist of several mosques, a church and the govenors palace. Ethiopias second biggest city Dire Dawa (230.000) is situated only 10 km from Harar Today advent has started all over the Christian world and we are taking part in the tradition by lighting our red candle. Finding one in this holy city wont be a problem. Harar is regarded the fourth most important muslim town after Mekka, Medina and Jerusalem. |
