Uganda, Monday 16 October 2006 - Visiting the chimpanzees on Ngamba Island on Sunday
|
On Sunday Olaug invited Kristin, Jennifer, Karungi, Kirabo and myself on a daytrip to Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary. Olaug was the sponsor for all of us and I would like to thank her for this generous treat and unforgettable experience meeting the 39 orphaned primates. Due to extensive warfare and poaching of primates, private organisation together with Ugandan government decided to buy this 1 square kilometre island to provide a new home and shelter for orphaned chimps. Its horrifying 5000 chimpanzees that are killed every year because of the bush meat trade. In addition to that there are also a marked for chimpanzee pets, and people pay lots of money for babies. |
