Rwanda, Thursday 5 October 2006 - Gorilla safari in the Volcano national park in Ruhengeri

This day has been marked as one of the highlights on cape2cape's national park list and being a wildlife enthusiast we hoped this was going to be BIG. And it was. This is something to recommend to other travellers, even though the price is pretty stiff, you know that the money goes to protect these endangered animals (only about 800 left in the wild).

Guided by two professional rangers and three soldiers we were lucky to find "our" family only 50 minutes walk away from the starting point. As I am not the most fit overlander in Africa, I was very happy to hear that the gorillas was moving towards us and we might have walked/climbed only about 40 minutes before we saw our first sighting on top of a dense tree top. Wow, this was amazing.

We spent one hour and twenty minutes together as they followed us down when we returned. Normally you got only one hour with the gorillas, but we were lucky. When we walked back, one of the gorillas came from the behind and pushed us away, so you could say this was close encounter.

We put together a few pictures from the gorilla day here.
