Malawi, Saturday 8 July 2006 - Why is it not possible to bring Malawi back to its prosperity?
|
Since we entered Malawi 18th of June we have been amazed by the people in this country. They are very polite, extremely friendly and they speak very good English. The kids are also very nice although they have learned both "money" and "sweets". We can accept that in a country promoted as the "Warm Hearth of Africa". By all means, this is a place to visit. Its a good value for money and you support the people of Malawi by bringing in some foreign currency Malawi gained independence from Britain and elected their first President in 1966 (Banda). When we visited Kasungu national park, we stopped and chatted with a man dressed in a nice black suit guarding the entrance to a huge palace. That was President Banda's resident and even though Banda has been dead for some years, this palace stands empty and still employs 80 people maintaining it. The government haven't decided what to do with the "castle like" property yet, but are now busy discussing whether or not to spend millions on a mausoleum for Banda. And people are starving! |
