Malawi, Tuesday 4 July 2006 - Remark! This is not me dressed up to celebrate Fourth of July.

We left Lilongwe on Monday and had chosen Kasungu national park as our next destination. We looked forward to a few days in park enjoying the nature and its wildlife. The first thing we meet after driving through the park gates was not as expected a herd of antelopes, but rather unexpected...a troop of soldiers on some kind of a military mission to recapture the country (at least that's what it looked like). they were dressed in full combat gear and camouflaged the pale/pink British skin tones. They had seized control over the whole lodge area, but fortunately the camp was a "combat free zone". We could hear the heavy diesel generators mixed with the playful snoring from the hippos in the dam nearby. What on earth are the doing in a national park? What kind of deal is this? The soldiers will stay in the park until July 20th and they are from the British Army Infantry Battle School. Don't you have allocated national parks to ruin in your own country? We will try not to be bothered or irritated by this any further as we came here to relax, not fight. |
