Malawi, Thursday 29 June 2006 - It is winter in southern part of Africa
|
Winter in Africa??? Adjust your mindset, its actually a season called winter down here as well. We Scandinavians always think that winter is a local phenomena and unique to us up north. Well, it is not totally true. In 2003 there was recorded minus 16 degrees Celsius in Sutherland, north of Cape Town. A temperature known to us Nordic creatures as pretty decent on a winter day. In Malawi where we are situated now, there has been down to 6,5 Celsius (at night) but if you just oversleep a bit and stay put in the sleeping bag until 9 in the morning, it will normalize to what we regard as decent African temperature. That's the good thing about African winter, it rises up to 25 and above during the day. When we travelled Lesotho earlier this year, we had snow on the roadside, and that was in February, so if you want to be in the southern part of Africa during the World Cup in 2010, bring some fleece... On the picture you can spot my co-pilot Eli Størset as she is practicing the Malawian way of rowing. To be honest, she looked more like Ingmar Stenmark doing his famous downhill dances (in slow motion). |
