Mozambique, Tuesday 13 June 2006 - Gorongosa National park a shadow of the old fame

During the last thirty years Gorongosa has almost lost its entire wildlife, which previously was so dense with game it was one of Africa's proud safari destinations. After nine hours driving around in the park, it was obvious that something had happened to the animals. All I could spot was four different antelopes, warthogs and baboons. There is of course animals in the park, but the numbers are few.

So what happened? As with so many African nations, Mozambique has also been affected with terrible civil wars and the devastating consequences thereof. Soldiers needed food and when there is war, the lack of food is affecting the whole nation. Gorongosa had plenty and became a haven for poaching and illegal hunting. Elephants were slaughtered by thousands for ivory and the rhinos got totally instinct.

I got to see some movies made by the Carr Foundation and it is evident that some help is underway. Vasco Galante, director of tourism development was determined and the project they have started is a thirty year commitment in bringing back Gorongosa on the safari map in Africa.
