5 March 2006 - Expensive Namibia, if you just would let us camp like this!!!

Namibia, a country that has been recommended by so many people was finally reached on Saturday 4 March. The first two days did not stand up to what we expected. First of all, it was damn expensive, we wanted to camp at the Fish River Canyon in the late Saturday afternoon, but luckily the prices were so horrible that we decided to keep driving.

To camp at Fish River they charged us 340 Rand/Namibian Dollars, the campfee was 170,- but because the campsite was within the borders of Fish River, we had to pay the parkfee as well. But what if we just want to camp and not go the 10 km up the path to watch the Canyon? No, its the RULES! We had to pay both. And we did NOT! If Namibia continue to charge us this way, well, then let me go somewhere else.

The poor girl behind the counter told us that the government recently adjusted the parkfees from 20 dollars to 70 dollars, so it looks like this is becoming a upmarket holiday destination, not intended for low budget tourists like ourselves.

The picture above shows the bushcamp a few kilometers north of Fish River Canyon.
