February, the long awaited takeoff from Johannesburg! WoW - The
first month has already been written into the history books (well, my private
history notepad that is). Tore Auset, my first co-pilot (and cousin) was as
thrilled as I was, as we took the first turn out of the property in Midrand,
Johannesburg. Imagine that this journey was just a joke two years back.
And what do we remember from this month? Well, the goodbyes
before takeoff are sad moments, but as we know we will be back, its just a "see
yah later ..." We started slowly and went to Alexandra to introduce Tore to
the South African township ghetto! (Sorry Ouma), then a detour to fix some rock
sliders and then we were off. The month took interesting turns and we met lots
of nice people. Already in Durban/Margate we found familiar faces, as my brother
and "Hafrika tour" was there enjoying a unofficial golf tournament.
In Drakensberg we visited Gods Golden Acre and thats
something we will cherish for ever. Meeting all the kids, the families and the
voluntairs was an eye opener for us. We went up to say goodbye to Nana sisters
in White Mountain and down at the coast we met Mr. Koen himself together with
his wife and baby. We have to thank a lot of people on our first month on the
road, the way we are received is nothing but a blessing. Good start and great
company in Tore, who suprised me in many ways as I have been awake many nights
prior to the trip, wondering how on earth will I survive this "strange" cousin
of mine for five weeks? Well Tore, I know you and you made an exceptional
performance and it was a pleasure watching all your excellent photographs. |
