ringte opp Abd Salam slik at han kunne snakke med
vakthavende. Som planlagt, så gjort! Vi hadde væpnet
vakt hele natten og sjøl om vi ligger tjue meter fra
hovedveien og det bråker så er dette helt supert.

We are taken good care of by Ter and his team here in
Malakal. Erlend sleeps in one of the rooms inside the
compound and Betsy and me are out on streets. We are
happy to enjoy clean showers, toilet with this
westernized seats of porcelain (if you know what I
mean?) Plenty of water for personal hygiene and also
Betsy's well being.

While we were waiting for the spare parts to show up
from Khartoum, we did some maintenance and brush up with
our lady friend. Erlend is trying to copy Jomar's
fieldwork with bravour. |

Team cape2cape on hold for a couple
of days. The camping site was good enough, although an
orchestra of wildlife kept us awake longer than
appreciated. We could have
parked away from the frogs the first night, as we still
could move around, but it was so cosy down by the
waterfront, so we choose to stay.
The next night, we had no choise. We
were stuck and had to wait for our tractor on day three.
My co-pilot Erlend didnt like this obstacle one bit and
I agree, we dont have time to lurk around the swamps. We
need to continue our journey. |

Abd Salam, our special friend in Khartoum are still
"with us". His idea of driving into a police station and
ask for shelter worked as planned. We halted, called Adb
Salam and gave the phone to the officer in charge. As my
arabic still is a little bit "off the beaten track", I
like to communicate in English. After a couple of
minutes on chat between my friend and the police, we
were welcome to stay outside the police fence, but with
an armed guard the whole night. Although we were only a
few meters away from the main road where the 32 meter
long trucks passed by and rumbled with noice, this
camping was top class. Even water and toilet facilities
were offered to us.

This was Erlends first night out of the city of Khartoum
and his first "wild camp", and I think it serves a
special page in his memory book.
Standing in front of 15 policemen, taking a picture of
Erlend and the officers early in the morning was
spectacular. |

Dette verkstedet ble et tvingende valg ettersom jenta mi
ble svakere og svakere på mandagen.
Servostyringen og bremsene virket ikke og til slutt så
ville hun ikke starte så lett heller. Jeg kjørte av
veien og spurte etter et verksted og folk løp rundt seg
sjøl og var veldig villige til å hjelpe. Klokken ti på
tirsdag hadde "min" mekaniker ikke kommet ennå, så vi
får se hvor langvarig dette blir. Ni mann måtte til for
å dytte dama bak verkstedet slik at jeg fikk litt
privatliv.

På kvelden ble jeg invitert på
vannpipe hygge. En av guttene spurte om jeg ville ha
Marihuana, men der måtte jeg takke nei. Eplesmak på
vannpipe tobakken minnet meg om Midt-Østen og Hebron,
hvor Camilla Stabell var en racer til å røyke vann. Jeg
viste noen dyrebilder til gutta og trakk meg tilbake. |
