We should have taken notes when our friends in Lalibela told us where they were camping, but this pension suited us well. The price was exceptionally low and access to cold shower and toilet and even a nice lawn for the tent. We drove into town (1,5 km) to find the "foreign food" place where we enjoyed a hamburger and coke.

As you can see, Johan has his own pool. Although the dept is only 20 cm, its there for him to use. Nice lawn with chairs and tables for the cold evening office work.

This ended up being a bit of a "cowboy" experience with a twist and lack of fair play. We found a marvelous place overlooking 25 percent of the entire Ethiopia. A farmer that tried his best to communicate that driving on his field damaged the crop. The thing was, the crop was already harvested. We were invited down to the farm houses, invited for dinner and coffee, so it was quite an experience. Nice people, with an infested neigbour.

After 15 minutes, I counted 54 people around Betsy. I would think, more than David Copperfield would attract if he stopped at a Tavern in the Midwest.

This was a combination of a wild camp and a village camp, as we are about 400 meters away from the closest huts. Look at the altitude, the trips highest camping site (so far)

It looks like a funeral, but it is only Johan that puts up his tent. The villagers are eager and helpful spectators.

I was determined to try wild camp although it looked almost impossible driving on the main road to Addis Ababa. After the news from my Swedish colleagues, it became a challenge to camp in the wild. Started to look right after noon, and it was not long before I found something that looked like a winner. All together it was 15 people that came to peak, and that's almost as good as nothing.

Three of my visitors that day. I camped between some farm communities and of course I wanted to meet the neighbours. One of the men communicated good in English and I asked him if it was okay to spend the night, so this is the place I landed on.

This night choice, due to trouble finding a quiet bush spot. They are charging more as I get closer to the capitol Addis and if you like arabic music and lot of noise around you, this is the place for you. I rather stay in the bush though.

Just some minor maintanance work and this could have been what it once was. But come on! It was more than nice for my needs. The beer was excellent.

Day 282 - Bush Camp 15 km south of Deritu

The roads are so nice in Ethiopia that you need to get off the road to face challenges. This bush camp was found 180 km from Moyale and is as quiet as it looks. One lonely stranger walked pass my hidden campsite and started talking. I just nodded, and used sign language to tell him that I intended to sleep here. He mumbled something and left.

This shows how I cover Betsy at night, especially when it is rainy season. Its anchored on all sides, as I already lost one due to heavy wind. This afternoon I bought firewood, but it was too wet and windy to start a fire.

Day 281 - Hotel Koket Bonona, Moyale

Position: 03 32.679 N, 39 02.904 E   (copy and paste into Google Earth search field)

Elevation: 1955 m above sea level

Arrived : Saturday 11 November 2006  : 17:30

Today's distance: 235  kilometres

Number of nights:  1

Price per night: 30 Birr

Moyale towns most expensive hotel provided me a room for 30 birr. I got my own shower and porcelain toilet recliner and off-white tiles. Who should complain? Camping was possible, but it was not easy to level Betsy and it was raining a lot. The decision was easy. After working in the mud a few hours earlier, a cold shower was what I needed.

To have Betsy as close to my room as possible is always a must and so I had to engage two guys to open gates and clean out passage for my girl.
